Zagora desert - palm groves of the Draa Valley below the Zagora mountain

The Zagora desert is the closest desert experience to Marrakech that includes a night in a camp. In two days you cross the High Atlas, visit Aït Ben Haddou, follow the palm groves of the Draa Valley and sleep among the dunes. But is two days enough, and are the dunes what you expect? This guide gives you an honest answer and a simple plan with a private driver.

Quick answer

  • Is 2 days enough? Yes for a first taste of the desert. No if you dream of huge dunes.
  • Drive: about 360 km from Marrakech, 6 to 7 hours with stops each way.
  • Dunes: small; Zagora is a pre-Saharan area. The big Erg Chigaga dunes are about 100 km further.
  • Alternative: Merzouga for the classic high dunes, in 3 to 4 days.
  • Price: per vehicle, on request.

What Is the Zagora Desert?

Zagora is a town in the Draa Valley, in south-eastern Morocco. A famous old sign there says “Tombouctou 52 jours”: 52 days to Timbuktu by camel, a reminder of the caravan routes that once crossed the Sahara.

When people say “Zagora desert”, they usually mean the area of small sand dunes a short drive from the town, together with the rocky desert and the huge palm oasis around it. Strictly speaking it is pre-Saharan. The large dunes of Erg Chigaga start beyond M’Hamid, roughly 100 km further south. Knowing this helps you choose: the Zagora desert is about atmosphere, palm groves and a peaceful camp night, not giant dunes.

2-Day Zagora Desert Itinerary from Marrakech

Day 1: Marrakech – Tizi n’Tichka – Aït Ben Haddou – Agdz – Zagora

Your driver picks you up in Marrakech in the morning. The road climbs through the High Atlas to the Tizi n’Tichka pass, about 2,260 metres high, with Berber villages and mountain views. After the pass, a short detour takes you to Aït Ben Haddou, the fortified village listed by UNESCO.

After lunch near Ouarzazate, the road crosses the Tizi n’Tinifift pass to Agdz and enters the Draa Valley, a green ribbon of palm trees and old kasbahs. You reach the Zagora desert in the late afternoon, in time for a camel ride at sunset and dinner at your camp.

Day 2: Zagora – Draa Valley – Ouarzazate – Marrakech

Watch the sunrise over the dunes, then have breakfast at the camp. The return follows the Draa Valley north, with photo stops among the palms, then climbs back over the High Atlas. You arrive in Marrakech in the early evening.

Is 2 Days Enough for the Zagora Desert?

For most travellers who want a first desert night and have limited time, yes. Two days give you a beautiful drive, a UNESCO site, a sunset camel ride and stars at night.

The downside is the driving: around 6 to 7 hours each way, with stops. If that sounds tiring, add a third day and sleep in Ouarzazate on the way back, or go further to Erg Chigaga for real high dunes.

Option Days What you get
Zagora desert 2 Small dunes, palm oasis, camp night
Zagora + Ouarzazate 3 Same, with a relaxed return and more time at Aït Ben Haddou
Erg Chigaga via Zagora 3 Large, remote dunes; last part by 4×4
Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) 3 to 4 The highest, most famous dunes in Morocco

Zagora vs Merzouga: Which Desert Should You Choose?

This is the question we hear most from travellers in Marrakech. Here is the simple answer:

  • Choose the Zagora desert if you have only 2 days, travel with small children, or care more about the journey and the oasis than about dune size.
  • Choose Merzouga if you want the classic Sahara picture of high orange dunes and can give it 3 to 4 days.

Our private tours from Marrakech to Merzouga start from €650 per vehicle for 3 days and from €750 per vehicle for 4 days. See the full itineraries on our Marrakech to Merzouga page, and compare all deserts in our Morocco desert Sahara guide.

Things to Do in the Zagora Desert

  • Camel ride at sunset: short rides of 1 to 2 hours are the classic Zagora experience.
  • Night in a desert camp: dinner, music around the fire and a clear sky full of stars.
  • Draa Valley palm groves: walk among date palms and small gardens irrigated by old channels.
  • Tamegroute: a village south of Zagora known for its green pottery and an old library of Quranic manuscripts.
  • Kasbahs of the Draa: earthen fortresses and villages, some still lived in.

Activities and camps are booked and paid separately. Your driver can help you plan them.

Best Time to Visit Zagora

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are ideal. Summer is very hot in the Draa Valley, often over 40°C, so plan activities for early morning and evening. Winter days are mild and sunny, but nights at the camp are cold. See our full guide to the best time to visit Morocco.

Zagora Desert Camps: What to Expect

Your night in the Zagora desert is spent in a camp among the dunes. Camps vary a lot, so it helps to know the options before you book:

  • Standard camps: traditional Berber tents with beds and blankets, shared bathrooms, dinner and breakfast. Simple and authentic.
  • Comfort camps: larger tents with private bathrooms, hot showers and better beds. The most popular choice for couples and families.
  • Luxury camps: spacious tents with furniture, private terraces and more refined meals.

Most Zagora desert camps include a camel ride at sunset, dinner with music around the fire and breakfast. Your driver brings you as close as the track allows, and the camp team takes care of the last part. Camps are booked and paid separately, so you can choose the style that fits your budget.

Whichever camp you choose, the experience is the same at its heart: silence, a sky full of stars and the first light on the dunes in the morning. For many travellers who only have two days, a night in the Zagora desert is the perfect introduction to the Sahara. If it makes you want more, the next step is Merzouga or Erg Chigaga; our Sahara tour Agadir guide and desert tours from Casablanca show other ways to reach them.

How to Get to the Zagora Desert from Marrakech

The Zagora desert is about 360 km from Marrakech. The road crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass, passes Ouarzazate and then follows the Draa Valley through Agdz to Zagora. Without stops, it takes around 6 to 7 hours; with photo stops and lunch, plan a full day.

There is no train to the Zagora desert, and buses are slow and do not stop at the viewpoints. A private driver is the easiest way: you leave when you want, stop at Aït Ben Haddou or a Draa Valley kasbah, and arrive at the camp before sunset. If you want to continue after the Zagora desert, your driver can take you on to Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley or even Merzouga.

What to Pack for the Zagora Desert

The Zagora desert is hot during the day for most of the year, but nights can be cold, especially from November to March. Your luggage stays in the vehicle, and for the camp you need only a small bag:

  • Layers: a warm jacket or fleece for the desert night, even in spring and autumn.
  • A scarf or light cotton cloth to protect your face from sun and sand.
  • Sunglasses, sun cream and a hat.
  • Comfortable closed shoes for walking on dunes and in gorges.
  • A small overnight bag for the camp, so the big suitcase stays in the car.
  • A power bank: many desert camps have limited electricity.
  • Some cash in dirhams for small shops, tips and village cafés.

Camps in the Zagora desert are usually close to the road, so you do not need to carry heavy bags far. Ask your camp if they provide extra blankets in winter.

Can You Visit the Zagora Desert in One Day?

Technically yes, but we do not recommend it. A day trip from Marrakech to the Zagora desert means around 12 to 14 hours of driving in one day, with almost no time to enjoy the dunes, the sunset or the stars.

Two days is the minimum to enjoy the Zagora desert: you drive one day, sleep in a desert camp, and return the next day with time for stops. If you have only one day, a better choice is the Agafay desert near Marrakech, a stony desert less than an hour from the city with camps, camel rides and sunset views.

If you have three days instead of two, you can add a night in the Zagora desert and a night in Ouarzazate or the Dades Valley on the way back. This makes the driving days much shorter, and you have time to visit the kasbahs of the Draa Valley, the pottery village of Tamegroute and the palm groves around Zagora at a relaxed pace. Ask us for a 3-day Zagora desert plan with your dates.

Practical Tips

  • Leave Marrakech by 8:00 to enjoy the stops and reach the camp before sunset.
  • Bring a warm jacket for the evening and a scarf for wind and sand.
  • Pack a small overnight bag; the rest of your luggage stays in the car.
  • Carry cash for lunch, drinks and tips.
  • Only have one evening? The Agafay desert near Marrakech is a stony desert one hour from the city.
  • Need a driver in the city first? See our private driver in Marrakech.
