3 day trip from Fes to Marrakech - view over the Fes medina before leaving for the Sahara

A 3 day trip from Fes to Marrakech through the Sahara is the smartest way to travel between Morocco’s two great imperial cities. Instead of driving straight across the country, you cross the Middle Atlas, sleep in the dunes of Merzouga, and reach Marrakech through the Todra Gorge, the Dades Valley and the kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou. With a private driver, the route follows your pace, not a group schedule.

Quick answer

  • Route: Fes – Ifrane – Midelt – Merzouga – Todra Gorge – Dades Valley – Ouarzazate – Aït Ben Haddou – Marrakech.
  • Distance: roughly 1,000 km over 3 days.
  • Nights: 1 in the Merzouga desert, 1 in the Dades Valley.
  • Prefer less driving? Choose 4 days and add a free day in Merzouga or a night in Ouarzazate.
  • Price: per vehicle, on request.

Why Choose a 3 Day Trip from Fes to Marrakech via the Desert?

The direct road from Fes to Marrakech takes about 6 to 7 hours and shows you mostly motorway. Going via the Sahara adds two days, but you see the most varied scenery in Morocco: cedar forests, high plateaus, palm valleys, red gorges and the dunes of Erg Chebbi. For many travellers this 3 day trip from Fes to Marrakech becomes the highlight of their whole holiday.

A private driver makes the long distances easier. You choose when to leave, where to stop for photos and lunch, and you never share the car with strangers. If you only need a direct transfer, see our Marrakech to Fes private transfer.

Day 1: Fes to Merzouga through the Middle Atlas

Your driver picks you up at your riad in Fes in the morning. The first stop is Ifrane, a clean mountain town often called the “Switzerland of Morocco” for its chalet-style houses. Nearby, the cedar forest near Azrou is home to Barbary macaques that you can often see by the road.

The road then climbs to the plateau around Midelt, with views of the High Atlas, before descending into the Ziz Valley, a long ribbon of palm trees between rocky cliffs. After Erfoud and Rissani you reach Merzouga in the late afternoon, in time for sunset over the dunes.

Driving: about 460 km, 7 to 8 hours with stops. Night: desert camp or hotel in Merzouga (booked by you or with our help).

3 day trip from Fes to Marrakech - winding road of the Dades Gorges

Day 2: Merzouga to the Dades Valley via the Todra Gorge

Wake up early for sunrise on the dunes, a moment most travellers remember for years. After breakfast at your camp, your driver meets you in Merzouga and heads west.

The main stop of the day is the Todra Gorge near Tinghir, where rock walls up to around 300 metres high close in around a narrow canyon. You can walk inside the gorge for 30 to 60 minutes. Then the road follows the Dades Valley, with its kasbahs and strange rock formations, to your hotel for the night.

Driving: about 250 to 300 km, 5 to 6 hours with stops. Night: Dades Valley.

Day 3: Dades Valley to Marrakech via Aït Ben Haddou

The last day crosses the Valley of Roses around Kelaat M’Gouna, famous for rose water and cosmetics, then reaches Ouarzazate, home of film studios. A short drive away is Aït Ben Haddou, the fortified village listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and used in many films and series.

After lunch, the road climbs the Tizi n’Tichka pass, the highest major road pass in the High Atlas at about 2,260 metres, then descends to Marrakech. You arrive in the early evening and your driver drops you at your riad.

Driving: about 320 km, 6 to 7 hours with stops.

Where to Sleep on the Way

You can book your own accommodation or ask us for ideas that fit your budget. Typical choices are:

  • Merzouga: a desert camp in the dunes (from simple to luxury tents with private bathrooms) or a hotel at the edge of the dunes.
  • Dades Valley: family-run hotels and kasbah guesthouses with views over the valley.
  • Ouarzazate (4-day option): larger hotels and riads close to the film studios and Aït Ben Haddou.

Desert camps usually include dinner and breakfast, and they arrange camel rides and sunset walks. Your driver drops you as close to the camp as the road allows, and the camp team takes you the last part by camel or 4×4.

Tips for a Smooth Fes to Marrakech Desert Trip

  • Leave Fes early on day 1 to reach Merzouga before sunset.
  • Pack a small overnight bag for the camp; the main luggage stays in the car.
  • Bring layers. Mountain passes and desert nights are cold, even when days are warm.
  • Carry cash for lunches, tips and small purchases in villages.
  • Choose spring or autumn for the most comfortable temperatures. Read our Morocco desert Sahara guide to compare seasons and deserts.

Is a 3 Day Trip from Fes to Marrakech Right for You?

A 3 day trip from Fes to Marrakech suits most travellers, but it helps to be honest about what it involves. You spend around 6 to 8 hours a day on the road, with regular stops. In return, you see the Middle Atlas, the Sahara and the southern valleys in one smooth journey, and you arrive in Marrakech without backtracking.

This 3 day trip from Fes to Marrakech is a great fit if:

  • you are already in Fes and need to reach Marrakech anyway;
  • you want one night in the desert but cannot spare a full week;
  • you travel as a couple, family or small group and prefer one private vehicle to a crowded minibus.

It may not be ideal if you get car sick easily or travel with very young children. In that case, choose the 4-day version, or a short Zagora desert trip from Marrakech. Not sure which desert to choose? Our Morocco desert Sahara guide compares them all.

Whatever you choose, the 3 day trip from Fes to Marrakech can be fully private: your driver, your vehicle and your timing. Tell us your dates and we prepare a fixed price per vehicle.

Best Time for a 3 Day Trip from Fes to Marrakech

The best time for a 3 day trip from Fes to Marrakech is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Days are warm, nights in the desert are pleasant, and the light is beautiful for photos in the gorges.

In winter (December to February), days are sunny but the Middle Atlas around Ifrane and the High Atlas can have snow, and desert nights are cold. The trip is still possible; your driver checks road conditions every morning. In summer (June to August), Merzouga is very hot in the afternoon, so we leave early and plan the long drives in the cooler hours. Whatever the season, a 3 day trip from Fes to Marrakech with a private driver lets you adapt the timing to the weather.

What to Pack for a 3 Day Trip from Fes to Marrakech

You only need a small bag for the desert night, because your luggage stays in the vehicle. For a 3 day trip from Fes to Marrakech, we suggest:

  • Layers: a warm jacket or fleece for the desert night, even in spring and autumn.
  • A scarf or light cotton cloth to protect your face from sun and sand.
  • Sunglasses, sun cream and a hat.
  • Comfortable closed shoes for walking on dunes and in gorges.
  • A small overnight bag for the camp, so the big suitcase stays in the car.
  • A power bank: many desert camps have limited electricity.
  • Some cash in dirhams for small shops, tips and village cafés.
